Jump start to Nationals
More than a dozen Valley high schools qualified for a USA National event in at least one category, in Regional competition held in mid-November at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale. The list of qualifiers included Desert Mountain, Thunderbird, Agua Fria, Deer Valley, Chaparral, Mountain View, Notre Dame Prep, Cactus Shadows, Westview, Xavier College Prep, Millenium, Horizon, and Pinnacle. The all-day event showcased cheer, tumbling, stunt, dance, pom, and song. And SportZine was there to capture a big part of the day in pictures. -
BOLDIN DONATES $10,000 TO INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin made a surprise visit to Independence High School in Glendale on Tuesday, November 15 to donate $10,000 to help benefit the school’s football program with new uniforms and equipment.
“This is a school that I just fell in love with,” commented Boldin. “I actually held a camp here over the summer and Coach Moore was so helpful. He got his whole team to come out and help with my camp and ever since then I’ve been in contact with the football team and the basketball team.”

THE MENTAL EDGE
Performing “In the Zone”
Many athletes have experienced what is known as being “in the zone,” where his/her performance seems automatic and effortless. While this is the goal for many athletes, it is more typical for athletes to perform when they are not in this automatic, optimal-performance zone. Learning to perform when not “in the zone” requires athletes to be mentally skilled; focus effectively; and manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions during competition.

TUNE-UP TIME
The Paradise Valley Invitational is one of the few early tournaments that give high school boys basketball teams a chance to ‘get their game on’ before regular-season play begins. This year, a field of 12 teams from around the Valley showed up for four days of competition, capped by a Saturday final between Paradise Valley HS and Cesar Chavez HS. Both had gone undefeated in pool play, but it was Cesar Chavez on top in the finals. -
He’s still Looking for Game
After leading ASU to three post-season appearances, Jason Braxton takes his game on the road.
With just 41/2 minutes left to play, Jason Braxton finished a drive to the basket that put ASU ahead of arch-rival Arizona, 61-60, in one of the last, and most important, games of a 4-year career as one of the most popular and recognizable players on the Sun Devil squad.

What’s left after you’ve run the table for an unbeaten season? How about another state title? The Chaparral Firebirds made it look easy this year, sweeping a very good Washington High School squad 5-0 in the 4A badminton state championship to win its third straight title and extend its unbeaten streak to 51 matches (17-0 this season). It was a team of seniors that capped their high school careers with an unbelievable three-year ride for Coach Heather Boyce.
