4A, 5A state tennis championships have great storylines

Notre Dame Prep took the 4A II singles title when Gina Losole defeated Queen Creek HS’s Chelsea Sloan, 6-1, 6-0 to cap a 17-0 season.  On the doubles court, the Saints were well represented, since all four competitors were from the Scottsdale school. Jackie Chang and Andrea Londen defeated teammates Kelsie Sanborn and Caroline Eversman, 6-0, 6-1.
The Chaparral girls, in 4A I competition, also swept both singles and doubles titles, as third-ranked Nikki Parker upset the No. 1 seed, Zaina Sufi of Tucson Catalina Foothills HS, 6-4, 6-4  for the singles title… and the Firebirds’ top-ranked doubles team of Liz Hammond and Molly Ruby put the title away with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over second-seeded Carrie Shuler and Alex Jenssen from Millennium HS.
In boys’ 4A I competition, No. 2 seed Zack Haffor from Tucson Catalina Foothills HS earned the singles championship with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow teammate, Daniel Hyman.  In doubles play, a pair of freshmen twin brothers from Millennium HS, Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson, took home the title in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Tringali and Ravi Ram, seniors from Catalina Foothills.
And more brothers were in the spotlight in 4A II, as Tucson Palo Verde High School’s Carlos Bermudez defeated his brother, Dominic Bermudez, for the singles title, 6-4, 6-1.  In the doubles competition, it was Mingus High School’s Alex Lineberry and Paul Paradise that defeated Vinnie Lenzi and Nathan Waters of Seton Catholic HS, 6-4, 6-4, for the this year’s doubles title.
