A crazy night in 5A football…and Saguaro finally falls

It was another week of cannibalizing in 5A-I football, as four of the top five-ranked
teams played each other.  No. 1 ranked Hamilton HS took care of
business by defeating No. 5 Chandler HS, 24-20, but No. 2 Red Mountain
HS will take a step or two down since it was mauled by No. 3 Brophy
Prep, 46-17.
But perhaps the biggest surprise was the end of the
37-game win steak built up by 4A-I top-ranked Saguaro HS.  It wasn’t so
much that the Sabercats got beat; they were playing a very good Canyon
del Oro (Tucson) team that was ranked just below them at No. 2.  It was
the way they got beat that stands out… a 44-0 blow-out that was all
but over at halftime.
    Junior tailback Ka’Deem Carey
ran all over the Cats, carrying for 299 yards; in the second half he
scored three times on back-to-back-to-back runs as he sought revenge
for the 2007 loss to Saguaro in the state championships.  That was more
than Saguaro’s total yardage (187) for the night.
Hamilton’s win was no cakewalk; it had to come from two scores down and won on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Travis Dean to Kyren Poe
with just three seconds left to play.  Brophy, on the other hand, had
little trouble upsetting the undefeated Red Mountain, as senior
tailback Max Leonesio ran for five TDs behind an offensive line that manhandled the Lions.
While there were no surprises among the top-ranked teams in either 5A-II or 4A-II, one more upset was taking place in 4A-I as Bradshaw Mountain HS (Prescott) knocked off No. 4 Raymond S. Kellis in a wild 34-33 contest. Bradshaw Mtn. took a 28-19 lead at the half and scored again in the final quarter to seal the win.
And, finally, unranked Fountain Hills HS jumped out to a 26-6 halftime lead then held on against a 14-point surge in the third quarter to upset No. 2 ranked Show Low HS, 32-27, in 3A competition.
Outstanding individual efforts marked play throughout the divisions as Dillon Classen had another productive game for Cactus Shadows HS as the quarterback notched five more TDs on a 9-for-14 night against Sinagua HS… Tavonn Dodson scored the first touchdown for North Canyon HS and then went on to rack up 101 yards rushing in a 47-8 win over Kofa HS – and QB Dominic Portocarrero passed for 258 yards and three TDs and ran for another… another century mark, this time 108 yards, by Jacom Brimhall as he carried 21 times to propel Mountain View (Mesa) to a 35-21 victory over Corona del Sol… in a 5A thriller that included 32 combined points in just the fourth quarter, Gilbert HS won, 35-32, in large part due to the passing/catching tandem of QB Brandon Bialkowski (22-for-38 for 303 yards) and Jesse Brantley (12 receptions for 244 yards)…Hayden McClellan had a workhorse of an evening for Deer Valley HS as he carried 23 times to get his 117 yards in a 17-0 win against Valley Vista HS… and QB Kody Karjala passed and ran Buckeye HS to a 28-21 win over Washington HS, finishing with 329 total yards and four touchdowns.
