Erickson settles on a new offensive coordinator

Look for wide-open football that moves fast and, hopefully, scores often when ASU opens the 2010 season.

Head coach Dennis Erickson has just named his new offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone, and that’s what Mazzone says to look for with the revamped Sun Devil offense.

“I grew up in the West and I know the Pacific-10 conference is at the top of the college football world,” he said upon being introduced today (Monday).  “I want to play the game fast, get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands and spread the field.  We will play a lot of no-huddle and we will play at different tempos.”

Mazzone comes to Tempe direct from the NFL, where he was a personnel consultant for the NY Jets in 2009 and wide receivers coach from 2006-08.   While with the Jets, he coached wide-outs Jericho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles, who set a Jets record for combined yardage and receptions.
