Once again, it’s the battle of the heavyweights
How many times do we see a wrestling match come down to the battle of the heavyweights to determine the outcome? Plenty, but it’s exciting every time!
Chris Brown won the heavyweight match as Skyline High School and Marcos de Niza High School came down to the wire at the Apache Junction Invitational over the weekend. The teams had both gone through pool play undefeated and were tied 30-30 when Brown pinned his opponent and put Skyline over the top.
Coronado High School finished third and host Apache Junction High School got a fourth-place finish. Perry High School was fifth, Williams Field High School sixth, and Tempe High School seventh.
Those selected as the tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestlers” were Andrew Patino from Coronado High School in the lower weights, Dominic Sotelo from Marcos de Niza in the middle weights, and Heath Boers from Williams Field High School in the upper weights.
Skyline, Marcos de Niza, and Apache Junction all had a trio of individual champions: (Skyline) Brown at heavyweight, Jared Gishie at 140, and Juan Munoz at 135. (Marcos) Aaron Pavlenko at 215, Mike Baca at 152, and Sotelo at 145. (Apache Junction) Trenton McMinn at 130, Chase Converse at 125, and Dallon Bush at 119.
