After wrestlers from Safford HS and Sunnyside HS were added to the All-Arizona wrestling team, there were just two spots left for other high schools.
The dominance of the two schools in Arizona high school wrestling continues, as Sunnyside won this year’s 5A-II dual state tournament and Sunnyside won the 3A team title. For Sunnyside, it was 12 consecutive titles, and a sixth straight for Safford.
Safford placed two wrestlers on the All-Arizona squad, just announced by The Arizona Republic, and Sunnyside had a pair as well. Trey Andrews (103 lbs) and Ryak Finch (119) represented Safford and the Sunnyside additions were Kory DeBerry (145) and Diego Bravo (215).
That left the 189 weight division, which was filled by Mark Mabry from Benson HS, and heavyweight, which went to Justin Rockhill from Rio Rico HS.
Finch was also named Wrestler of the Year and Tom Wokasch at Mingus HS is this years’ Coach of the Year.
Finch, who was named the outstanding wrestler at this year’s state championships, had an unbelievable high school career, winning three state titles while at Safford HS. The fourth just slipped through his grasp when, as a freshman, he lost in the state finals. He started the season ranked No. 1 in the nation and racked up a 56-0 record. He has only lost two matches in his four-year career, finishing with a 203-2 mark.
Wokasch led his Mingus HS team to a 22-0 record this year, despite having few wrestlers return from last years’ defending state champion squad. The Marauders left behind an impressive list of accomplishments this season, including winning the prestigious Flowing Wells Tournament that included the defending champions from 5A-I and 5A-II.
This was Wokasch’s final season working the mats. He retired after winning this state title, the school’s fifth in a row.
