The Show Low High School boys’ track team combined speed and distance strength to upset the hosts of this year’s Eastern Arizona Rotary Invitational.
In a large field of teams from 23 schools, the Cougars took first place at the event, which was held at Safford High School. Safford, with 99 team points, finished 20 points behind the winners. Florence HS finished in third with 70.5 points, followed by Tombstone HS (65) and Snowflake HS (55).
But on the girls side, the Snowflake squad wouldn’t settle for anything less than first place, compiling 91 points to outscore second-place Show Low HS, with 79.5 points. Safford HS came in third (74), followed by Sahuarita HS (51), and Round Valley HS (48).
The Show Low boys swept all three relay races – 4×100, 4×400, 4×800 – and added four first-place individual finishes. Cody Bell won both the 200m (23.30) and 400m (51.22), and Brian Duncan took care of the distance events, winning the 1,600m (4:53.41) and the 3,200m (10:39.88).
The Snowflake girls took a different approach to winning their half of the compeition, picking up four top-four finishes in the field events, a second in the 4×400 relay, and sweeping the top two places in the 200m.
It was a photo-finish in the 200m dash, as Alex Merrill broke the tape in 27.36, just a hair ahead of teammate Samara Hansen’s 27.38.
Kelsey Livingston was the workhorse in the field events, finishing second in the long jump (14’10”), third in the triple jump (31’6″), and fourth in the pole vault (8’o”). Kim Johnson added a fourth-place finish in the high jump by clearing the bar at 4’10”.
The surprise of the event had to be the first-place finish by the Show Low boys. They kinda snuck up on the field this year, after managing just a seventh-place finish at the 3A state meet last year.
